Tape Measure!? I pulled the tape measure out too much and it got stuck. I took it to bits and uncoiled it all but how do you re-assemble it? which way to I wind the copper coil and tape? how how how? Thanks for all answers!

James May replied: "I am sure the best way is to figure it out yourself....i once disasembled a pull starter and the coil sprung out....quite complex to put together....my sympathys"

Phil The Manc. replied: "Three words.......Bin, New one."

ElectronProbabilityCloud replied: "Hehehe, buy a new one. you can fix them but they tend to spring apart at a crucial moment and slice fingers off."

Jim W replied: "Unless it's a very special tape, buy another. To rewind the tape, start at the end on the inside of the tape and coil/wind it one turn at a time. When you get it all wound up, reassemble it. When it gets stuck in the future, shake it or rap it sharply on the side before you try to disassemble it. This how you learn, it's called negative reinforcement."

ryanr R replied: "buy a new one"

mik replied: "it would be better for you to buy a new one. Even if you did manage to rewind it, it would never work properly again"

DIY Doc replied: "As others have stated, better to buy new. The devices spring is machine installed and wound, and to directly answer your Q, Re-wound clockwise. To effectively get the tape to work again will be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole."

s.jamie@btinternet.com replied: "Markets and car boot sales £1.00... go and get one mate...."

Tommy C replied: "Ide say ask your father but hes probably the one thats going to woop your ass for touching his things"

Dune replied: "You are wasting your time, you will never get the tension right again. I used to sell them regularity because of that reason."

Serenity replied: "I agree with the others, unless for some reason it is just not possible, or this particular tape measure is special, such as it use to belong to somebody special who passed away, (My husband has one his father owned, and his father before him, so it *is* possible! lol) buy a new one. Now, you wind it so the curved edge is curving away from the body of the box. I wish I had a diagram I could show you! lol The tape is not flat. It curve outward just a bit. That curve goes in an outward mode away from the measure box. Darn, this is difficult. lol Ok, buy a new one! Please have a nice day."

bigdaddy9965 replied: "i have about 6 of them ill send ya one, they are so cheap"

diyer replied: "I also recommend buy a new one. I did the same with a clockwork radio my husband over wound. The coil was so tight there was no way of getting the correct tension in it without cutting myself or making myself blind (or getting very frustrated with goggles and gloves on). When you but I new one if you use it a lot make sure it is long enough, and also wide enough. The very cheep on are narrow and bend more easily when you are trying to measure. This may cost £3 - £5 rather than £1. I have also seen one with an FM radio in it, but I can not remember where"

Russell B replied: "Just out of interest i have a Black & Decker powered tape measure it cost about £20+ my young son got hold of it and ran the tape right out its case with a bit of effort i was able to repair and replace the tape back in its case! It the tape measure is of no high value i would dispose of it and purchase a new one"

Hel replied: "I would personally buy a new one. I had a similar problem with a self retracting reel and I cudnt put it back because I cudnt reel it tight enough to go back where it should. Personally I would be tempted to get one of those automatic tape measures so that it didn't happen again :) yes its not cheap but think of the money it would save you in the future of you did the same thing about pulling it out too far."

How accurate is a laser tape measure and can it be used for professional purposes? My boyfriend is an architectural engineer and has to go to sites to measure his projects. He uses a tape measure and can't do it alone sometimes because the length is so long. I want to get him a laser tape measure as a gift but it has to be accurate because it is for professional use.

barb replied: "yes to both, very accurate, use one all the time."

How to put a tape measure back together? My son pulled apart a stanley tape measure, how we dont know, now i am trying to put it back together. I get it together but it no longer retracts. What am i doing wrong. Is there a special i havent figured out yet?

wallyinsa replied: "I have tried many, many, many times. And never once.......... I just go buy a new one"

richard g replied: "i think the spring has sprung on the inside.... you have to buy a new one."

D replied: "if it no longer retract and it is a Stanley and you still have the receipt then return it... a tape measure that no longer retracts is covered by the warranty..."

woody replied: "buy another one very hard to repair"

firefoxy replied: "for god's sake, just buy another one, you'll waste less time."

What is a self centering tape measure? I need to get a tape measure that is not self centering and I am not certain what self-centering means.

Don M replied: "A centering measure tape tells you the 1/2 measure of the width of your board.....Lets say your board is 11" wide, the centering tape will show you that the center of the boards is 51/2" most tapes are not self centering Good luck"

Keith M replied: "It has two scales, one full sized and one half-sized. Using the full-sized scale, you take the measurement, say 23 1/4" Then you simply look up 23 1/4" on the half size scale and you have the center of your work"

Does a gynecologist use a regular tape measure to measure pregnant belly? Does a gynecologist use a regular tape measure to measure pregnant belly? I was just curious. I am 30 weeks pregnant and everyone says I don't look like I'm 30 weeks. I thought if a gynecologist uses a regular tape measure then maybe I can monitor the growth of my belly at home.

M Kerr RN L&D replied: "Yep! Regular Seamtress type measuring tape."

Kitty replied: "yes, mine does, they use one of the soft ones that you use when sewing clothing. so you don't have anything cold and hard on your belly, just nice and soft to the touch. you can buy them anywhere they sell fabric or crafts. but i would not worry too much on monitoring your growth, all babies grow differently, and when you drop it will throw you off b/c it will not be as big, but that it is totally up to you."

how do i put a retractable tape measure back together? my son pulled the tape measure out, and I've opened the whole thing up, with everything flying everywhere.....how can I piece it back together? I know, I should just buy another, but I thought maybe I could give this a shot by trying to put it back together! LMAO! It is a mess in here!

Tom S replied: "I'm sorry to laugh but oh my that must be a mess. They're not much money, what about just buying a new one. Prolly be a nightmare to put back together."

Nancy B replied: "that thing will be such a headache!! just go buy another one"

IDrum4Life replied: "You don't. You go to hardware store and buy a new one. They are never the same once they are pulled all the way out."

Dune replied: "You can buy the complete insert but it will probably far easier to just junk it. You will never get the spring tensioned properly."

jadecat_12 replied: "Wow, that's funny. my answer would be nearly identical to Tom S above. (Sorry to laugh!)"

Glenn C replied: "Don't bother putting it back together. Go to Sears, buy a new Craftsman tape measure, and if it ever breaks again for any reason, Sears will give you a free replacement."

David M replied: "Sorry to hear that. I just bought two for $1.25 each. (they were on the clearance table.) Sounds like a trip to the hardware store for a new one."

what is the red dot on a tape measure? I noticed a red dot at the 6" marking on a tape measure and was told to find out what it means by my boss. What is this marking for? The red dot I'm questioning is at the 6-1/2" mark on the tape measure. What is this for?

baddog replied: "blood."

Michael F replied: "Perhaps it's a Hindu tape measure."

margaret m replied: "Maybe the boss has been doing some measuring, and he wants you to guess what!!!!"

J P replied: "I just checked 5 different tape measures and none of them had that mark.."

etcher1 replied: "http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=Build/TapeMeasure.html This link cover just about all the marking on a tape. Doesn't seem to be a red dot at 6". Hopefully he is not sending you after a sky hook. Hope it helps."

jmarvelous1943 replied: "Its the average length of a left handed monkey wrench"

how to read a tape measure to the 30seconds? at the bottom of tape measure little lines are in 30 seconds, need to know for a test for new job.

bigg_dogg44 replied: "its not 30 seconds, its 32's of an inch...... going backwards its: 1" 1/2" 1/4" 1/8" 1/16" 32 of and inch 64 of and inch (2) 32's = a 1/16th of an inch and so on lic. gen. contractor"

mark replied: "most tapes measure to the 16th's. easy way to find out is count them. if there are 32 segments then your tape reads to the 32's."

gdgunsnstuf replied: "OK DUDE, I BELIEVE THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO TELL IF A TAPE MEASURE HAS MEASUREMENTS IN 32NDS.OF AN INCH. TO TELL COUNT ALL OF THE LINES BETWEEN THE INCHES. IF THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 32, THEN EACH SLASH = 1 32ND OF AN INCH. IF THE TOTAL IS 64, THEN EACH IS 1 64TH OF AN INCH."

zcommodore replied: "You mean 32nds? Like half of 1/16th? I knew a carpenter friend who just read to 16ths and then if it was half-way to the next, he would say a big sixteenth. If you are cutting wood or nearly anything else with a saw, anything bigger than a sixteenth is wasting your time. Use a file after cutting it a tad big if you need to get that close. Otherwise to answer your question: 1/32, 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 13/32, 7/16, 15/32, 1/2, 17/32, 9/16, 19/32, 5/8, 21/32, 11/16, 23/32, 3/4, 25/32, 13/16, 27/32, 15/16, 31/32, 1 The above fractions are the "normal" divisions on a typical tape measure used here in the US that has 32 divisions between inches."

norm replied: "There are 32 little lines in each inch. Each line is a 32nd of an inch. So for example a half inch would be 16 32nds but one line over that would be 17 32nds and one line under would be 15 32nds. I hope that explains it for you. Good luck with your job."

Admiral replied: "It shoudn't take all day to read a tape.30 seconds is along time.Try looking at one.Typing is 20 times harder.Think in eighths. Ex. 243&5 means 243 inches and 5 eighths of an inch"

nikomat77 replied: "If your measuring look for the closest 1/16th mark and multilply by 2, then add or minus one depending on the side of the line your going to. 3/16 = 6/32 if its the next mark past 3/16 then it would be 7/32, if you go to an 1/8 mark x4, if its a quarter mark x6 ect ect, if its finish work then it does matter with wood if its metal work it can be very important."

Lissa pooh replied: "------- 0 inches - 1/32" -- 1/16" - 3/32" ---- 1/8" - 5/32" -- 3/16" - 7/32" ----- 1/4" - 9/32" -- 5/16" - 11/32" --- 3/8" - 13/32" -- 7/16" - 15/32" ------ 1/2" and so on...."

How do you read a tape measure? I am applying for a job online and one of the requirements is the ability to read a tape measure "to the 8th and 16th".....could anyone explain to me thoroughly what that means please?

Jeremy replied: "A tape measure is typically in inches.. there is tic marks within the inches... the 4 big ones are quarter inch.. the ones smaller than that are 8th inch and the ones smaller than that are 16th inch.. typically 16th inch is as small as it gets on a tape measure.. Hope this helps"

rich1967a replied: "iIiIiIiIiIiIiIiI I have use the letter i for this example. the first i is 1/16 of and inch the second is 2/16th of an inch, witch reduces down to 1/8Th of an inch and so forth............. count them; reduce them..... 8/16Th's are 1/2 half of inch.... You can do this over and over. It not hard. Good luck in you new job!"
